Magnifying Ghost Glass - A Reworked Classic.

Posted by Alan Terrell on

New in to us here at Red Dragon Magic is the Magnifying Ghost Glass - I've been excited about this one coming into the store ever since the test product landed on my desk. I have performed a version of the Ghost Glass (also known as Kersten's Krystal) since I was 8 years old and it always got a strong reaction from the crowd.

At the time the prop was nothing more than a piece of circular glass which displayed a mini version of the card when breathed upon it. Back then, my patter explained that it was a piece from a crystal ball that had been smashed many years before.

The new version of this prop has been incorporated into a magnifying glass, and lends itself to my original patter even better than before.

After forcing a card onto the spectator I explain that in order for me not to see the card I require them to sit on it to guarantee that I can not get to it without them knowing! - This normally raises a few eyebrows and smiles. Using the magnifying glass I then proceed to examine their fingerprints for clues. This gives the opportunity for the old gags (if you can get away with it) of asking them to hold out their hand, followed by your response of 'no, the clean one,  - oh I'm sorry you were right the first time!)

After a bit of business searching across the fingers and remaining deck, admit defeat, but then stumble on a last minute idea. Ask your spectator to tilt their head backwards and open their mouth. Explain that you will use the magic magnifying glass to look down their throat, through their stomach, and out of their a...... and you will tell them the name of the card!

As you explain this make sure the magnifying glass is already above their mouth. As you quickly dodge over what exactly you will be looking out the other end (!) they will usually laugh (if not remind them to keep breathing during the procedure) this will cause enough breath to hit the glass and reveal the card. Quickly bring the glass up from their mouths and into their line of sight to reveal the card direct to them.

Once they call out the card, have them stand up and check the card underneath them to confirm that you are right.

I have received so many great reactions with this trick that it is still in my walkabout / close up act to this day and the addition of the magnifying glass set up makes it even better. Plus, as a bonus, the handle includes secret markings so you always know which side displays which card - a vast improvement on the old design. We've also provided a blue velvet bag so your prop remains in top condition when traveling from venue to venue.

I am so pleased that we are able to offer this version of the Ghost Glass here at RDM, and that the quality meets the standard we expect when out performing. I hope you have fun with this great trick.
